Shrieker Chick
The Shrieker Chick, as cute as it is, might be the worst pet in the game. It gives the player +2% CRIT for each piece of Scouting Gear they wear and +2 Looted Baubles. Scouting gear isn’t very good because scouting isn’t that important, so it’s not worth taking with you and has no use on the Mountain.
The Shrieker Chick is a fun throwback to the special boss in the first game, but she doesn’t have much going for her other than that.
Crocodilian Hatchling
The Crocodile Hatchling doesn’t often move people. It gives players a 2% damage boost when they move during battle, but there is a 20% chance that they will also lose 1 speed. This ability is especially frustrating because it doesn’t usually pay off fast enough in short fights. The speed debuff isn’t needed because the extra damage isn’t that strong on its own.
The Crocodilian Hatchling, on the other hand, is at its best in longer fights, like those with bosses. Even so, the extra damage isn’t worth it unless a player’s team is designed to move around a lot.
Crimson Tick
The Crimson Tick can do something very interesting. On Killing Blow, it gives a player’s party a 5% chance to make The Blood. The Blood is a rare battle item that gives players more Strength, Speed, and CRIT chance at the cost of Horror.
Even though The Blood can be helpful as long as players have a good way to deal with Stress, the Tick has a low chance of making it, making this pet unpredictable. It would be helpful if the Crimson Tick got a buff that made it work more often.
Larval Carrion Eater
The Larval Carrion Eater doesn’t have very much power. Every time a player kills a Corpse, they can Heal 15% of their health and gain the Block state effect. But the Corpse’s ability to heal doesn’t work when it’s being killed, so players have to hit the Corpse directly to kill it. When players don’t have a good way to kill Corpses, it takes them at least two turns to kill one and get the bonus.
Even though the ability will save players some resources in the long run, if there are already Corpses on the ground, they are probably going to win anyway. On top of that, the pet is totally useless when fighting bosses. One thing that makes up for it, though, is that the Larval Carnion Eater really shines in the Foeter.
Unnatural Owlet
This pet is good for teams that can put out a lot of debuffs because it gives +5% Debuff RES Piercing per Tinker’s Gear Equipped and increases the chance of making items from Stagecoach Items. This can help players make a lot of Traps and useful Combat Items, but it’s not as useful if the team doesn’t have many Debuffs.
Since the team can put out a lot of Debuffs, it’s great to be able to regularly land them. But the Owlet isn’t as good if the team doesn’t have a lot of Debuffs, and it’s less useful for short runs.
Reanimated Rabbit
The Reanimated Rabbit helps players in a lot of ways. It gives the party +1 Speed for every piece of Food Gear that is worn and +1 Max HP for every 4 pieces of Food Gear that are in the inventory. In this game, food is pretty common, so being able to turn it into extra health is very helpful and can help a party get stronger.
Low HP characters benefit the most from getting Max HP because it makes heals work better for them. Speed is always a good thing, and the more Food a player has, the better their chances of being Resolute. The Rabbit is a good choice overall.
Orphan Wolf Cub
The Orphan Wolf Cub is the first pet that players get in Darkest Dungeon 2. It’s great for new players because it’s simple and easy to use. This pet gives you a really helpful bonus of +10% Positive Relationship Chance and a +5% Stress Resistance bonus for every piece of Luxury Gear you wear.
This is great for players who want to get the most out of the relationships in their party. Since Luxury Gears are already pretty good, the Orphan Wolf Cub works well with them and can be a great addition to the parties of new players.
Pygmy Pliskin
The Pygmy Pliskin is a great pet for people who want to help heal their party. This pet gives an extra +5% healing from skills for every piece of Medical Gear you wear. Also, at the end of each Location, it will heal a random Hero for 5% of their overall HP.
The Pliskin works well with the Medical Gear, which is already pretty good by itself. Overall, it can be a great addition to the team, especially for players who want to focus on healing.
Mucilaginous Slime
This pet is very good at stopping Debuffs, which is very important in Darkest Dungeon 2 because enemies can put a lot of Debuffs on a party. For every piece of Road Gear a player wears, their resistance to debuffs goes up by 5%, and they have a better chance of getting things from road trash.
All of the Road Gear is pretty good, and because there are so many debuffs in Slope Game, Debuff RES is very important. So, being able to consistently block them is great, and there’s a lot of possibility for stacking. Also, taking things from the road is already pretty common, so making it even more common is a great idea.
Shambler’s Spawn
The Shambler’s Spawn is a great item for players who want to be able to build in different ways. It counts as a Dark Impulse for the whole team, makes Cultist Trinkets work better, and gives +200% more Cultist Encounters when Location Scouting. This pet gives you a lot of options for how to build. There are some great Cultist Trinkets, and not having to have a Dark Impulse to wear them is a big benefit.
But you can’t scout other than during Cultist Encounters, so all of this comes at a cost. This is a big trade-off, but Scouting isn’t that important, and the benefits gained are too good to worry about.
On PC, you can now play Darkest Dungeon 2.
