Five Roof Maintenance Steps You Should Never Ignore as a Homeowner

As a homeowner, you already know that your home is your first line of defense, which means that the roof and walls serve as shields to protect you and your loved ones from harsh weather conditions. On that note, you should take care of your shields, especially the roof. Roof maintenance is essential to keep your home intact.

Here is a list of essential roof maintenance that you should never ignore as a homeowner.

Regular Roof Inspection

The first thing that you should focus on is to inspect your roof regularly. With regular roof inspections, you can avoid costly repairs – otherwise – you will have to pay a heavy price for a full roof replacement which is something you want to avoid at all costs.

Roof replacement can cost you a lot in the long run, which is why you should install your roof regularly, especially twice a year – especially after the winter and summer seasons. So, when inspecting the roof, look out for curled or damaged shingles.

All you need to do is be aware of the condition of the roof so you know when to repair it.

Regular Shingles Inspection

The roof shingles serve a purpose, which is to protect your home from harsh weather. With each passing year, the shingles of your roof will start to deteriorate as the asphalt shingles will start to loosen up. Loose shingles will create gaps, which can cause moisture to gather, which results in rotting and leaks.

That said, make sure to inspect the roof for cracked tiles, missing shingles, and the presence of granules. If you detect missing shingles, make sure to detect the matter and get down to the root as soon as possible.

Regular Gutters Cleaning

The gutter system on the roof collects water that runs off from shingles and maneuvers it away from the foundational structure of your house. On that note, you should ideally clean your gutters twice a year – once after the Spring season is over and once after the Fall season.

Over time, if you fail to clean the gutters regularly, twigs, leaves, and debris will keep collecting in the gutter. This kind of buildup causes the rainwater to get clogged, which can damage the space underneath the shingles.

Regular Branches Trimming

As a homeowner, you should know that by trimming the branches in your garden, you can make space for the sunlight to fall on the roof, which can prevent moss from growing. The thing about long branches is that they can damage the shingles of your roof, especially during harsh weather. Besides, the hanging branches, if they aren’t trimmed, can introduce rodents and pests onto the roof of your house, which can find a way into your house, too.

Regular Chimney Inspection

The chimney is another part of the roof of your house, which is why you should inspect the chimney and the caulk around the chimney regularly. With the passing years, the caulking around the chimney can crack, which will then cause moisture to get in between.

The point is that you need to inspect the roof regularly so that you can fix any small issues in time before they become bigger issues and damage the roof.
